Mission
Whatever it is, the Spirit Ventures proposes a dual-pronged strategy that creates unique opportunities and very attractive returns in the energy sector at first:
Thesis 1: We will invest in early, mid, and late staged companies according to our New Energy Technologies and Sustainability investment thesis (~70%)
Thesis 2: We will create “platform” SPICs (Special Purpose Investment Companies) for specific acquisition targets that will be the basis for further investments and acquisitions (~30%)
Our thesis (1) is to invest in unique energy and sustainability companies from early to late stage. We see this as a core strategy that we will implement as soon as the 1st close of the fund is completed. We have a strong pipeline centered in Northern Europe. As we work through our investment opportunities, we will in parallel expand our pipeline to include companies in other European countries and North America too.
Our thesis (2) is to invest in companies, using an “orchestration platform” strategy where the formation of a SPIC will be the kernel. Spirit Ventures will organize a SPIC for each orchestration platform company, and Spirit Ventures will supply up to 15% of the capital. The balance of the capital shall come from other sources, such as existing Fund LPs or other 3rd parties. After the SPIC has acquired the target, we will implement a strategy of building the company into a significant supplier in its field (-s). The exit of these “platforms” will occur either through a standard IPO or a trade-sale (M&A), with expected high-multiple returns.
Our vision is to leverage as much “public” monies for our investment objects across Europe as possible. We believe that the areas of novel circular economy energy production, and storage will be a focus area for many years to come, especially in Europe. We have already an exciting pipeline of companies that we want to engage with. We also aim to leverage our global networks to assist our portfolio companies to reach new markets as well as develop new business alliances in Asia and the Americas.
